Porticos and Pediments

"Is it still called a portico if there are no columns?"

Miss Monkeys,
No. It is not. Portico's break out from the flat architecture of the facade. A portico will naturally create a covered porch- sometimes small, sometimes larger.

When the architectural detail is added above the door without it protruding at all from the facade- as shown below- this is called a pediment. Pediments can also be found above windows sometimes, and also can be found inside.

Above you see a Craftsman door with a simple pediment, and below is a Federal pediment. So- there you go- a three minute lesson for the day.
